Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about therapy, insurance, and what to expect
How long are therapy sessions?
Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. This gives us enough time to work through issues while maintaining focus and energy. Initial consultations may be slightly longer.
Do you accept insurance?
I am a private pay practice and do not accept insurance directly. This allows me to focus entirely on your care without limitations imposed by insurance companies. After each session, I provide a detailed superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement (typically 50-80% depending on your plan).
Do you offer both in-person and telehealth sessions?
Yes, I offer both options. In-person sessions are available at my Maryland office, and telehealth sessions are conducted via secure video conferencing. You can choose what works best for you, and we can switch between formats if your needs change.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This allows me to offer the time to someone else who needs it. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session fee.
How do I know if therapy is right for me or my child?
If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or struggling with daily life, therapy can help. For children, signs include behavior changes, school struggles, or emotional difficulties. I offer free consultations where we can discuss your concerns and see if we're a good fit. There's no commitment required.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know each other. We'll talk about what brings you to therapy, your goals, and your history. I'll explain how I work and answer any questions. For children, I often meet with parents first to understand the situation, then spend time with the child. It's a relaxed, judgment-free conversation.
How long will I need therapy?
This varies for everyone. Some people find relief in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly check in on your progress and goals. You're always in control of when to end therapy. My goal is to give you tools so you don't need me forever.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), not a psychiatrist, so I don't prescribe medication. However, I can refer you to a psychiatrist if medication might be helpful. Many people benefit from therapy alone, while others find a combination of therapy and medication works best.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, everything you share in therapy is confidential with a few exceptions required by law: if there's risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or if a court orders records. For children and teens, I balance confidentiality with keeping parents informed in age-appropriate ways. We'll discuss this in our first session.
What states can you provide telehealth services in?
I'm licensed to provide telehealth therapy to clients located in Maryland. If you're considering telehealth and live outside Maryland, please contact me to discuss options.
Do you work with families or just individuals?
I work with both! I offer individual therapy for children, teens, and adults, as well as family therapy and couples counseling. When working with children, I often include parents in part of the session or have separate parent meetings to ensure everyone is working together.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring a form of payment and any questions you have. For telehealth, make sure you're in a private space with good internet. There's no need to prepare anything else—just come as you are.
What if I don't click with you as a therapist?
The relationship between therapist and client is really important. If we're not a good fit, that's completely okay. I can provide referrals to other therapists who might be a better match. Your comfort and progress matter most.
Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
Yes, I offer flexible scheduling including some evening and weekend appointments to accommodate work and school schedules. Availability varies, so contact me to discuss what times work best for you.
Still have questions?
I'm happy to answer any other questions you have. The best way to get specific answers about your situation is to schedule a free consultation.
